Compost Conundrum

Tonight I am starting my 3rd attempt at composting. My first was pure trial and error with little knowledge of composting, just a simple knowledge of what to put in and what not to put in. I read up on the subject here and there while the pile sat stagnant; this was trashed after being deemed a failure.

My second try was done in a milk crate, with a piece of cardboard on the bottom, and a slab of glass on the top to prevent it getting soaked from rain. This batch was tossed as well after drying out to a crisp and not having enough ingredients to add.

Now that brings us back to tonight. This time I put a couple-inch thick layer of brown down (old moist leaves from last year’s raking), an inch of green (fruit and vegetable matter that I chopped, thinking this might help it break down faster), and sprinkled the remainder of a bag of potting soil on the top. I then cut a trash bag to open it up and use as a cover, then weighed it down with rocks.

We’ll see how this trial goes, but I’m feeling much better about it compared to the last ones. If any fellow composters have any tips or tricks to share that would be awesome!!! For right now I am keeping it cheap… As in no start up cost, I’m simply using resources I already have available.
